YORK, Pa. – Tyler Perez was one of four Bears in double figures as he finished with a team-high 16 points off the bench leading Coast Guard to a 68-61 win over Marymount (Va.) in the York College Spartan Classic to start the new year.
Coast Guard improves to 5-4 overall while Marymount drops to 7-5 on the season. The Bears will take on Albertus Magnus on Sunday at 2:00 in the Spartan Classic.
Perez was 7 for 9 from the field including 2 of 3 from behind the arc. He had 10 points to lead the Bears in the first half.
Noah Baldez added 15 points, Packy Witkowski finished with 13 points and Jason Frazer had 12 points, all in the second half in the win. Madison Maloney had a game-high nine rebounds, seven offensive.
Taiga Walker led Marymount with 18 points.
Coast Guard shot 40 percent (24-60) from the floor and hit 6 of 19 from 3-point range. The Saints were 20 of 58 (34.5 percent) and hit 6 of 22 from behind the arc.
The Bears led 16-9 with 11:16 left in the first half before running off 12 straight as the lead ballooned to 28-9 with 7:19 left in the opening half.
Marymount would respond with a 15-2 cutting the deficit to 30-24 with 2:10 left in the first half. Coast Guard led 34-28 at the half.
The Bears came out of the locker room on fire using a 14-2 run to start the second half, eight of those points from Jason Frazer, as Coast Guard opened up a 48-30 lead with 12:40 left.
The Saints once again answered to climb back into the game as they used 12-2 run making the score 50-42 with 7:49 left in the game.
Coast Guard held a 57-52 lead with 3:43 left before layups with Witkowski and Baldez pushed the lead to 61-52 with 2:10 left to put the game away.
