NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Annabella Farabaugh had a team-high 15 points while Breanna Wood had a double-double with season-highs of 12 points and 11 rebounds leading Coast Guard to a 60-48 win over host Norwich opening round of the Ed Hockenbury Classic at Norwich University.
The Bears improve to 6-2 and earn a spot in the championship game tomorrow at 3:00 while Norwich drops to 2-5 on the season and will play in the consolation game at 1:00.
Jacqueline Ward added 12 points off the bench for Coast Guard.
Riley Bennett had a game-high 16 points for Norwich.
The Bears shot 31.7 percent (20-63) and hit 5 of 23 from behind the arch in the win while Norwich was 18 of 64 (28.1 percent) and made 3 of 11 from 3-point range.
Coast Guard used a 15-3 run with eight points from Puddington over the final 6:30 of the opening quarter to open up a 21-9 lead after the first quarter. Farabaugh led the way with nine first quarter points.
The Cadets used a 12-1 run to start the second quarter cutting the deficit to 22-21 with 5:15 left in the first half. Coast Guard scored five of the final six points in the quarter for a 31-25 halftime lead.
Norwich would close the margin to 37-36 with 4:50 left in the third, but the Bears would score the final eight points of the quarter to start an 11-0 run as the Bears led 48-36 with 9:25 left in the game.
The Cadets would not score a field goal for over 13 minutes before a layup by Kristieann Desilvo with 1:25 left which made the score 58-44.
