NEW LONDON, Conn.-- Sophomore Kyra Hartman led Coast Guard women's basketball with 18 points as the Bears defeated Mitchell 70-63 on the road on Tuesday night. Coast Guard improves to 8-2 on the season as Mitchell drops to 4-4.
The Bears have won their third straight game, continuing their best start since the 2013-'14 season.
Senior Breanna Wood tallied her second double-double of the season with 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Sophomore Emma Puddington scored in double figures with a season-high 17 points, including 15 in the first half alone. Junior Annabella Farabaugh scored in double figures for the eighth time this season with 10 points.
Le'Sandra Turner led the Mariners with a double-double featuring 19 points and 10 rebounds. Sam McKenna recorded 13 points and eight rebounds and Kelsey Hernandez scored 12 points and six rebounds for the Mariners.
Farabaugh and Hartman made back-to-back threes to open the game as the Bears jumped ahead with a 10-point lead off a three-pointer by Zoe Riis-Fallica at 5:07, giving Coast Guard a 17-7 advantage. The Bears were dominant to end the first quarter, going on a 13-4 run, taking a 30-13 lead.
Hartman and Puddinton extended the run with back-to-back threes to open the second quarter, to lead 36-13. The Mariners went on a 13-1 run in the second quarter to cut their deficit, 37-26. Turner made two free throws with 12 seconds remaining in the half as Mitchell trailed, 42-34.
The Mariners went on a 7-2 run to open the third, capped by a layup by Sam McKenna at 7:18 to bring Mitchell within three, 44-41. The Bears answered, scoring the next nine points finished off a layup from Hartman to extend Coast Guard's lead, 53-41. With just over two minutes in the quarter, McKenna made a layup for the Mariners as they trailed, 53-49.
Coast Guard outscored Mitchell, 17-14 in the final quarter. Turner made a jumper at 4:25 to cut the Mariners deficit, 60-58. Farabaugh made two free throws and a three-pointer with 2:25 remaining to extend the Bears lead, 65-58. McKenna made a three-pointer with nine seconds remaining to bring the Mariners within six, but Coast Guard freshman Jacqueline Ward made a free throw with seven seconds remaining, for the Bears 70-63 final.
The Bears shot a season-high in three-pointers, going 9-26 (34.6%). Mitchell held a 47-43 advantage in rebounds.
The Bears will return to action on Monday, December 30 as they host Sage at 5:30 PM.
