Bears Run Win Streak to Five

NEW LONDON, Conn. –  Coast Guard won a pair of matches to run its win streak to five on Saturday afternoon as the Bears, ranked 9th in New England, beat New Paltz 3-2 and Eastern Connecticut 3-0 to improve to 19-7 on the season.

The Bears are back in action when they travel to Amherst on Tuesday at 6:00 in the final non-conference game of the season.

COAST GUARD 3, NEW PALTZ 2

Noelle Tursky registered a triple-double as she had a match-high 16 kills, 21 assists and 12 digs to go with a team-high four aces leading the Bears to the five set win . Coast Guard won 25-17, 18-25, 25-22, 19-25, 15-10.

Amanda Dake added 13 kills and a team-high 18 digs while Makenna Martin led the Bears with 24 assists in the win.

New Paltz led the opening set 9-8 before the Bears ran off six straight points for a 14-9 lead. The Hawks would close the deficit to 17-15 before Coast Guard answered with five straight for a 22-15 lead and  the Bears won the opener 25-15.

The Hawks had an early 10-3 lead in the second set, but Coast Guard would score nine of the next 10 points, including three service aces by Tursky, as the Bears took the lead 12-11. The Bears led 18-17 before the Hawks ran off the final eight points to win the set 25-18. Gebhardt had four kills in the 8-0 run.

In the third, the Bears would score seven straight to take a 15-11 lead. The Hawks would cut the lead to 22-21 before Tursky had back-to-back kills and Dake later finished the set off with a kill for the 25-22 win.

The Hawks trailed 13-12 in the fourth before scoring seven of the next eight points for a 19-14 edge and won 25-19 to even the match.

New Paltz led 6-3 in the fifth, but Coast Guard ran off six straight to take the lead for good 9-6. Coast Guard led 10-9 and scored five of the final six to win the match with a 15-10 fifth set decision.


COAST GUARD 3, EASTERN CONNECTICUT 0

Dake led the Bears with 11 kills to go with 14 digs as the Bears won 25-22, 25-22, 25-23 to close out the afternoon.

Tursky added 10 kills and team-high 16 assists while Destiny Johnson hit .429 and had seven kills for the Bears.

Eastern led 16-12 in the opening set before Coast Guard used a 10-1 run to take a 22-17 lead. The Warriors would answer with four straight cutting the deficit to 22-21 before the Bears scored three of the final four points for a 25-22 win.

The Warriors jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the second and Eastern Conn. led 14-11 when the Bears scored five straight for a 16-14 edge. With the score tied 22-22, Coast Guard scored the final three points for the 25-22 win.

Eastern Conn. had another quick start in the third taking a 9-4 lead and increasing the lead to 15-8 and the Warriors were in control leading 23-19 before Coast Guard scored the final six points to close out the match with a 25-23 win.
